Lately Annie has been saying she can’t believe how much her belly has been growing. For the most part she wasn’t really showing very much until recently, but I’m glad she’s finally starting to show more. It makes the pregnancy seem that much more real to both of us. The above pictures were taken about a month apart. The first picture was taken in September, the second in October & the last one – this month. So Oliver has really been making his presence known. During the last sonogram we found out that he was “breach” which means his feet are facing down and he has been jumping up and down on Annie’s pelvic bone & it doesn’t feel too good. I tried to tell Oliver to take it easy on his mom, but for some reason he didn’t seem to want to listen.

Oliver's profile - he looks smart doesn't he?

Oliver's profile - he looks smart doesn't he?

This sonogram was scheduled through a prenatal urologists office in order to get a specialists opinion on little Oliver’s kidneys. It turns out that everything is ok after all. All throughout the sonogram the tech kept saying she wasn’t sure why the doctor had stated the kidneys looked swollen. She said there was a build-up of fluid around the kidneys but that the amount of build-up is normal in boys and that no interventional care was needed at this time. Annie and I had been praying as were a lot of other people that we would get this sort of news so we were both really excited and felt blessed to see God work in this way.  We will probably have to keep an eye out on the kidneys but it looks like they shouldn’t affect the development of his lungs or any other organs and everything should progress normally. How sweet is that?

oliver has been much more active lately, which is reassuring and also fun to feel him with me wherever i am.  right now he is breech so it sometimes feels like he is tap-dancing on my pubic bone, which is a crazy feeling (and has interrupted my reading groups a few times).  during the sonogram, since he is getting much stronger, he actually kicked me pretty hard a couple times because he didn’t like his space being invaded.  also, the tech commented several times on how beautiful his heart was (which not really sure what she meant), but there are not too many higher compliments to a mother than that her son has a beautiful heart…..so there is my cheesy moment.  i am already smitten with this boy and am so excited to meet him.

After Annie and I heard that we were having a boy we decided it was time to figure out what we would name him, unlike most people who already have a name picked out by this time. So I went online and spent an entire day just looking at boys names from A to Z, writing down any that I liked. All day long I was badgering Annie with the names and by the end of that night we had narrowed the list down to just 2 but couldn’t decide which one we liked better.  We decided to pray and sleep on it. The next day we were eating lunch with my family and announced we were close on a baby’s name. My sister-in-law, Beth pulled Annie aside and said that she had a name that she thought needed to be added to our list – that name turned out to be Oliver – one of the two names we had narrowed it down to. We decided this was confirmation enough and announced that Oliver would be his name. At that point we found out that my sister (Abby) & brother-in-law (Erik) had just chosen the name of Jonah for their son over Oliver. So it seemed like it was just made to be his name.

Unexpected News

At the end of our 2nd sonogram the tech told me that they would send the images to our doctor & they would let us know the results.  Annie received a call from the midwife late the next day stating that she needed to talk. This message was left on Annie’s phone minutes before they closed the office that day & needless to say probably wasn’t the best thing to do for someone having their first child. Annie called me and was pretty upset because we didn’t know why the midwife called or what was wrong and Annie had a really bad feeling about it. She thought maybe they were going to tell us that our baby had a tiny brain or was missing it entirely or something like that. The next day she was able to speak to the midwife and was told that it appeared he had two swollen kidneys. She was very brief but explained this is fairly common in boys. Well we did some research on the internet & found out how this type of thing can affect a baby & that probably wasn’t the best thing for our psyche. Anyways, they told us we would need to have another sonogram in order to see if the kidneys were continuing to swell and so they could keep an eye on it.

Sonogram Numero Dos…

everyone but jon was pretty surprised to see some little boy parts in our second sonogram.  for some reason we were all mostly convinced that it was a girl, and all i heard from friends and family when we announced the sex, was “what??  i thought it was going to be a girl!”……..which i am not sure why, but we all got that in our heads.  however, i am really excited about having a little boy and all the adventures that we will be going on together.  i guess i am learning early on as a parent that i cant project on my kids what or who i think they should be, but be excited and supportive about who they become.  we are very excited to meet our little engelbaby boy!

P.S. My brother Dave said that Annie & I were destined to have a baby girl first because we are quote “girl people”. Whatever that means. We would have been happy either way, but I’d like to remind Dave that his firstborn was a girl & that didn’t turn out to bad for him, but it looks like we will be going down a different path.  :)

It's a boy!

It's a BOY!

At first it looked like there was no way we were going to find out what sex our baby would be because he was laying in a difficult position to really be able to tell. The umbilical cord was in the way most of the sonogram but then towards the end we saw the above picture. If you look at the top of the picture you are actually looking at our baby’s two butt cheeks & then right below towards the middle of the screen you can see a little boy part. The other thing you see next to it is his foot. So he was actually laying on his back upside down with your view being of the lower part of his body.
