Annie and I knew each other from the time we were little kids. We went to church together & played together when our families would get together, but I always hung around my older brother & her older brother. I didn’t really pay too much attention to her because after all she was a girl & they had cooties. Right around the time I had just finished 3rd grade my family moved away to a suburb of Chicago, IL & that’s when our relationship, if you could call it that, ended for the most part. Her family came up to Chicago to visit once but as Annie will tell you I never paid any attention to her & I honestly didn’t even remember her coming on that trip.
As I got older my family once again moved back to sunny Florida. When I was a senior in high school I remember going to the airport to pick up my older brother Dave who was & is friends with Annie’s older brother Kenny. They were getting back from somewhere & were coming back together, unbeknownst to me. When I got to the airport Annie was there waiting for Kenny & I have to admit I was pretty awestruck. I couldn’t believe how beautiful she was, so of course I never said a word because I was so shy.
As the years went on we saw each other here and there but never really even had a conversation. One year Annie was supposed to go on a trip to Haiti to work with some missionaries but a hurricane came & she had to cancel her trip. Since it had been planned for so long and her family had already planned on being out of town for Thanksgiving – both she and her brother Kenny were invited to my parents place for Thanksgiving. That’s when I re-noticed her :) That whole day I thought she was flirting with me, but as Annie will tell you she did nothing of the sort, but that was just enough to give me a little hope and get the wheels in my head turning.
My brother, Dave, and his wife, Beth kept trying to find a way to get Annie and I together by dropping little hints and planning events where we would both be there. Sure enough I finally started to really pay notice.
One day I decided to get up the courage to call Annie and ask her out on a date. So I called up my brother and got her phone #. After pumping myself up for a couple hours with motivational rock music :) I made the call – only to get her voicemail or someones voicemail – all I heard was a little voice say what sounded like “frow frow”. So I left a very awkward message asking her to call me and told her I was interested in meeting up sometime and maybe going to a movie or something really stupid. Anyways, it turned out to be her voicemail & she actually called me back & we set up our first date. Which led to our first conversation. Which led to our first circus trip, which led to holding hands, etc, etc, etc. Well, you get the picture. Which eventually led to Oliver. I praise God everyday for the gift that is my wife and I hope that through this blog you will get just a sense of that love that I have for her and for my soon to be born little son. I hope you enjoyed this glimpse into how it all came about.
